BWAP Forum No. 2: “NIGHT WORK”

For our second BWAP Forum, we shall focus on the subject of “NIGHT WORK.” Please share your thoughts with us and with our co-workers in the BPO companies about this matter.

To start our discussion of this subject, we share with you our initial thoughts.

Night work is also known as the “graveyard shift.” Under the Labor Code, night shift is from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am the following day. The Code also provides additional premium pay for night shift. Th additional pay is purportedly to compensate the worker for the disturbance of sleep and of his circadian rhythm.

    Work in call centers whose clients are located in North America and Europe must necessarily work the graveyard shift, considering the time zones of these countries and the Philippines.

We share with you some of the findings of researches on sleep and circadian rhythm disturbance.

– sleep deficiency brought about by some lifestyle factors is common among BPO workers in the Philippines. Researches in many countries, most notably, the United States, Great Britain and Japan, indicate that there are health risks which come with extended night work and sleep deprivation. These may include, hypertension, stroke, obesity, diabetes, depression, mental illness, cancer and substance abuse;

– Fondings of a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology show that there is a connection between “night shift work and increased risk of cancer in men;”

– the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has identified drowsy driving as “one of the most significant unrecognized traffic safety problems.

Please share your thoughts about night work with us and with our co-workers in the BPO industry.
